Frogger High Score Challenge
« on: June 17, 2009, 01:20:47 AM »

George Costanza, what can I say about the man? George was never able to hold down a steady job, but thanks to loving parents, he always had a place to stay. Then complained about what crappy parents he had. If anything, George was a loser. Overweight, unemployed, annoying to his friends and great at video games. In an episode of Seinfeld titled, 'The Frogger' , George and Jerry visit their teen hangout. A typical pizza parlor that hosted girls in short skirts, shared milk shakes, and a Frogger arcade machine in the corner. At the pizza parlor, George discovers he still has the high score on the old Frogger video game, with a score of 860,630 points.

That is, until June 20th, 2009. Donald Hayes will be challenging the mythical score at Challenge Arcade in Wyomissing, PA. Having already accomplished the feat using MAME, Mr. Hayes is setting out to prove it can be done on the original arcade machine. This wont be the first time George's score has been challenged, not even by Don Hayes himself. Approximately an hour into each previous attempt, the machine being used would become glitchy, forcing the game session to be compromised and a high score to be inconclusive. This time the hardware has been analyzed and approved by the folks at Twin Galaxies.  Judge Dave Nelson will be present for the event, making sure the run is properly recorded, and the high score documented should it happen.

If you are in the area, make sure you stop by and watch the event. If you don't like crowds, pop in on Friday and watch the practice rounds. If you aren't in the area at all, but would like to see a small bit of video game history get made, check out the Challenge Arcade justin.tv livefeed. [ http://www.justin.tv/challengearcade ]

Also, here is some information about Don Hayes, from Challenge Arcade spokes/hype/front man, Chuck Whitby.

Quote from: Chuck
Donald Hayes. The iron man of classic coin-ops. Possibly the best classic arcade gamer of all time.

Well, hell. That makes it so!

In 1981, Konami release "Frogger", which quickly captivated the attention of gamers
worldwide, and which is now regarded as a classic from the golden era of classic
arcade gaming.

First-time players watched the demo screen as seven small green frogs hopped across
the screen one-by-one forming a straight line, and then hopped upwards in formation
to spell out the word "Frogger". The default high score of 4,630 points, a relatively
easy goal to achieve. And it appeared that the score "turned over" after 99,990 points.

Little did players realize how difficult reaching the first 100,000 point mark would be,
let alone the long-standing world record of more than 440,000 points by Mark Robichek
that would stand for more than twenty years.

Donald Hayes, one of today's hottest classic arcade gamers who has seven (7) classic
arcade world records under his belt, has added an eighth title, by becoming the new
world record holder with a final score of
589,350 points, the first and only gamer to pass the 500K mark. And in doing so, Donald
wins a $250.00 "bounty" that I placed on this record earlier in the year.

It has been years since I have played frogger.  It is a really fun retro game, and I would like to download it to my Xbox360. Have they released an updated version over the last decade?

Well I priced everything seperately on Ebay I get about 108 dollars if you sold each game and the console all seperate... So i would say between 80 - 100 bux for the whole set.
