Alien Arena 2009: Available NOW!
« on: June 22, 2009, 03:28:44 AM »

Alien Arena has been a staple in the Open Source game world. Having been built on a customized version of id's Tech-2 CRX engine, the game received generally good reviews from the gaming press. Being free to download and play on both Linux and Windows operating systems helps boost the games coverage.

Now, Games On Net has a story showcasing the features in Alien Arena 2009. It's highly suggested readers head over to their site and check out the incredibly advancements made by the team.

Here are a few quick highlights.

  • GLSL per-pixel lighting on all surfaces.
  • OpenAL 1.1
  • Ogg-Vorbis support.
  • GLSL post process framebuffer effects.
  • New scoreboards.
  • New HUD.
  • Stereo music files.
  • Seven new maps and two new player characters.
  • Light volumes.
  • Voice taunt system.

To some of you, that list might not mean anything, so let me break it down. This means a leaner, meaner, faster and smoother Alien Arena. The game is supposed to set a new standard in freeware FPS games. If you like deathmatch fragging, check it out and let us know what you think.

[EDIT] The icculus servers seem to be getting hit pretty hard. This was to be epected, but if you don't get through, know that it's because of the games popularity. This means more players for you to get involved with  ;)

Alien Arena is a fast paced, furious frag fest with arenas ranging from the small, to the massive. With a large built-in player base, it's never hard to find a good match going on, at any hour of the day. The community is friendly, as well as prolific. Dozens of maps, models, and various accessories have been created by community members to add on to the game experience. The CRX engine that powers Alien Arena has received very signifigant upgrades in recent releases, resulting
not only in stunning new visuals, but vastly increased performance as well.
